Task
This is a group assignment. The given site is a tropical rainforest and we are required to select a setting for our site. Next, we will have to use the design principles from assignment 1 and apply them to this assignment to create a pavilion with different spaces in the rainforest. The pavilion must be constructed with a minimum of 70% dry materials. It should also not be more than 8 meters high and in double storeys only. We have to come out with orthographic drawings, concept diagrams and a 1:50 scale model.
Progress
Precedent studies
After deciding on our site and its settings, we began to search for inspiration and compiled them into a document. We also studied the site's characteristics and its context so that it helped with our design afterwards.
Sketching out ideas
After collecting inspiration, we then began to sketch our ideas and decide on our design intentions, elements, principles, materials, etc. We also tested them out with test models along the way and improved on the design.
Making test models
After sketching out our ideas, we started to translate and test them out with test models on a smaller scale. We did a total of 8 test models to try on different concepts and designs.
Reflection
Throughout this assignment, I have understood more about the conditions and the context of designing a structure in a tropical rainforest. I have also understood the effect of materials that are used for creating each architectural spaces in the pavilion. Next, I have also explored different concept by using a few design elements and principles to create simple designs. Other than that, I have also improved my model crafting and drawing skills. We have tested out multiple models and the craftmanship of each models are being improved.
