Task
This is an individual assignment. The given site for this assignment is Bukit Jalil Recreational Park. We are required to conduct site visit at the park and study the context, and tangible and intangible elements of the park. Then, we are required to come out with data collection and site analysis in groups of the park. Each of us also has to choose a specific site of the park to analyse in detail and design a structure that is no more than 100 sqm in a 1:100 scale and for 2 users that can stay for up to 3 days. We will also have to construct orthographic drawings of the models manually.
Progress
Site visit (Group)
We went for site visits in groups to analyse every physical and non-physical element in the park. We went to different times and days to collect different data that can be useful afterwards.
Site data collection (Group)
We divided the data to analyse in the park in groups among the coursemates. We have compiled a total of 7 categories of studies in the park: site layout, climatic studies, natural physical features, existing man-made structures, circulation patterns, human activities and sensory studies.
Small site analysis (Group)
After having detailed data on the entire park, we began to focus more on the small site in smaller groups. We chose 2 small sites in the park and began to analyse the context and physical and non-physical elements of each of the small sites. We presented them in a diagrammatic form with design response vignette matrix.
Site use alternatives
After analysing the smaller sites, each of us began to pick one potential site for our structure to be on. I started to come out with some site-use alternatives in diagrams and some annotations.
Sketching out ideas
After all of the site analysis, I started thinking of my design and concept by sketching them out. We are required to include 5 spaces which are a discovery space, a discussion space, a resting space, a working space and a bathroom. I started off by creating some basic shapes and studied the user studies.
Making test models
I tested out the designs by making multiple test models. The "evolution" and transformation of the design process can be shown through the models. The first test model was a massing model to determine the sizes of each space. The second test model included some basic shapes and elements with the division of each space. The third test model has included more detailed architectural elements and refined spaces.
Reflection
Throughout this assignment, I have learned how to analyse and identify site context and collect important data. I have also learned to draw diagrammatic site analysis with a design response vignette matrix through this. I have also understood more about the interpretation of the users' characters and their needs in relation to the design and the spaces. Throughout the design process, I have learned how to comprehend my designs with the surroundings and the users. The design elements and principles have also complemented with the site and the materials used. Throughout this assignment, my drawing and model-making skills have also improved along the way. My workmanship and creativity have improved and my drawings are more informative and detailed.
